Photorefractive keratectomy – PRK

Once the epithelium is accessed, the corneal “stroma” or base can be reshaped to correct vision. For clients who have thinner corneas or another condition that makes LASIK impossible, Contoura PRK treatment can be a life-changing alternative. Dr. Soroudi performs Contoura PRK, often called “flapless LASIK.”

World-class eye centers in Beverly Hills & Los Angeles

We are 100% committed to providing our clients with the best eye care in the world. Dr. Soroudi’s credentials, experience, track record, and inventions have led to his reputation as one of the most accomplished eye surgeons practicing today. When performing PRK, he uses the ultimate eye mapping tool, Contoura, to create a more uniform corneal shape and high-resolution vision without haloes or night glare.

Why choose Dr. Soroudi?

Dr. Soroudi has performed surgery on members of international royal families, Hollywood celebrities, professional athletes, doctors, lawyers, and billionaire clients who fly in to undergo vision correction at our state-of-the-art, in-house clinic. At our three eye care centers, we are equipped with among the best technology available in the world, along with a hand-selected, caring, experienced staff that caters to our clients’ needs and wishes.

Your comfort and privacy matter to us

Each of our eye centers has an eye-specialty ambulatory surgery center and laser suite in-house. This is rare in ophthalmology; most ophthalmologists in Southern California use "open-access" surgery centers to perform their LASIK or cataract and lens replacement surgeries. When you visit Soroudi Advanced LASIK & Eye Centers, we ensure your journey to vision correction is private, comfortable, and exclusive.

Excerpted from Dr. Soroudi’s Book: Advanced Refractive Surgery:

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), also known as “FLAPLESS LASIK” or “Surface Ablation,” is a type of refractive surgery like LASIK. PRK is an absolutely wonderful method to correct vision and, just like LASIK, can provide you with 20/20 or better vision! In a nutshell, the surface “skin” of the cornea is washed off using a 20% alcohol solution. Then, the same Allegretto Wavelight EX500 Laser that’s used for LASIK is employed to remove a very small amount of tissue from the cornea.

A bandage contact lens is placed on the eye for about 1-2 weeks until the cornea is healed, after which it’s removed and thrown away.  Dr. Soroudi only performs PRK on clients who either don’t qualify for LASIK (have thin or irregular corneas), have had prior refractive surgery (RK or even LASIK), or who perform occupational/vocational activities where their eyes are prone to injury (e.g., boxers/basketball players).

The procedure is actually faster than LASIK, and there’s absolutely no pain or pressure. Unlike LASIK however, the recovery is quite painful for 2-3 days as the eye heals.

Dr. Soroudi provides all his PRK patients with what he calls “OMG eye drops” (Tetracaine numbing drops) to help them stay comfortable.

Our private, in-house surgical suites

Dr. Soroudi is one of a small group of LASIK specialists in Los Angeles who possess their own temperature and humidity-controlled in-house surgical suites rather than using an open-access surgery center.
Our centers are equipped with the all-new Alcon Allegretto Wavelight EX500 Flying Spot Excimer Laser.

Only the WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser utilizes Wavefront Optimized ablation profiles designed to help maintain the natural corneal shape

PerfectPulse Technology represents a fresh, groundbreaking approach to laser vision correction, supporting the speed, precision, and safety of the Allegretto laser. It offers improvements that are revolutionary in the field. Energy control measures adjust energy levels in the laser pulse from creation to delivery.

Advanced laser technology brings superior results

Lasers emit precise, controlled beams of energy. The Allegretto laser employs a proprietary overlapping spot placement method to ensure accurate energy placement. This is one of the ways that the Allegretto achieves a smoother, more natural corneal surface than many other lasers used for vision correction.

The ultimate in customized vision correction with PRK

Allegretto laser engineering ensures that the amount of energy in each laser pulse has been calibrated to exactly the right level. After the beam has been created, it passes through three “checkpoints” on its way through the system. At each of these points, the energy level is checked and adjusted if necessary, ensuring that the beam is perfectly ‘tuned’ at its destination.
