Ptosis: Droopy Eyelid Muscle Lift

Droopy Eyelid (“Ptosis”) Repair (Eyelid Tendon Lift) Surgery

Many people present to Dr. Soroudi to have their eyelids “lifted” up. This condition is called “Ptosis” and is different than someone who just has “extra skin” on top of their eyelids. Ptosis is a result of a “stretched” tendon on the upper eyelid (sort of like a stretched garage door chain).

There are a variety of reasons why peoples’ eyelids start to droop (develop Ptosis). Whatever the cause, ptosis, aside from its obvious cosmetic stigma, can truly affect one’s vision. The most common reason people develop ptosis is that the tendon that keeps the eye open starts to dehisce and can no longer support the weight of the eyelid.

Before- and just 10 days after left upper eyelid Ptosis Repair by Dr. Soroudi, MD, MS

There are two basic ways ptosis can be repaired:

  • From the outside (requires cutting the eyelid skin to access the underlying tendon). This is called a “Levator Advancement” Procedure.
  • From the inside of the eyelid (the skin is not cut at all). This is called a Muellerectomy or a Fasanella-Servat Procedure.

Both of these approaches are very effective, but depending on the cause, Dr. Soroudi might decide to choose one approach over the other.

Dr. Soroudi performs both of these procedures in-house under only local anesthesia with minimal sedation for patient comfort. You may return to your usual work activities in a day or two with minimal bleeding or bruising.

What sets Dr. Soroudi aside is he does NOT use a blade (or scissors) to perform your lower eyelid surgery! This technique allows for an almost BLOODLESS surgical experience, with almost NO BRUISING, and a relatively PAINLESS recovery (MUCH shorter than if performed with a blade/scissors as is commonly performed by other surgeons). He uses 7-0 Prolene Sutures on his patients (vs. a much thicker 6-0 Suture) for the most cosmetically pleasing results with very little scarring.

Dr. Soroudi performs ALL his oculoplastic procedures in the comfort of his OWN medicare-certified surgery centers IN-HOUSE (vs. the back office as is commonly done in some doctors offices), obviating the need to goto a hospital or an “open-access” surgery center, saving his patients time and money! Having an anesthetist and a registered nurse present, Dr. Soroudi ensures utmost comfort and safety for ALL of his patients who choose the BEST experience with their eyelid plastic surgery.
