Photorefractive Keratectomy

Excerpted from Dr. Soroudi’s Book: Advanced Refractive Surgery:

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), also known as “FLAPLESS LASIK” or “Surface Ablation” is a type of refractive surgery like LASIK.
PRK is an absolutely wonderful method to correct vision and, just like LASIK, can provide you with 20/20 or better vision!

In a nutshell, the surface “skin” of the Cornea is washed off using 20% Alcohol solution. Then, the same Allegretto Wavelight EX500 Laser (that’s used for LASIK) is used to remove a very small amount of tissue from the Cornea. A bandage contact lens is placed on the eye for about 1-2 weeks until the Cornea is healed, after which it’s removed and thrown away.

Dr. Soroudi only performs PRK on people who either don’t qualify for LASIK (have thin or irregular Corneas), they’ve had prior refractive surgery (RK or even LASIK), or they perform occupational/vocational activities where their eyes are prone to injury (e.g., Boxers/Basketball Players).

The procedure is actually faster than LASIK and there’s absolutely no pain or pressure. Unlike LASIK however, the recovery is quite painful for 2-3 days as the eye heals. Dr. Soroudi provides ALL of his PRK patients with what he calls “OMG eye drops” (Tetracaine Numbing Drops) to help them endure the first

Dr. Soroudi is one of a small group of LASIK specialists in Los Angeles who possess their own temperature- and humiditycontrolled LASIK Surgical Suites in-house (instead of going to an open-access surgery center). We are so proud to announce that our center is equipped with the all-new Alcon Alegretto Wavelight EX500 Flying Spot Excimer Laser.

Only the WaveLight® EX500 Excimer Laser utilizes Wavefront Optimized® ablation profiles designed to help maintain the natural corneal shape

The Alegretto laser allows Dr. Soroudi to perform a customized, “wavefront-guided ablation profile (CONTOURA) to his patients who demand just the absolute BEST in vision correction technology: better vision, day and night! This technology maintains the natural corneal shape, which minimized the potential for night-time glare, even in very high prescriptions (up to -10 Diopters of Nearsightedness!). Also, because of its speed (takes only 1.4 seconds per Diopter), it reduce the potential for dehydration of the cornea and minimizes patient fixation fatigue, allowing for a much more pleasant and seamless LASIK experience. At the same time, with a powerful 1050 Hz-type multi-dimensional eye tracker, the EX500 offers safety and exceptional precision in case someone moves their eye during surgery.
PerfectPulse Technology™ represents a new approach to laser vision correction – it accounts for speed, precision, and safety in the Allegretto laser, and offers improvements that are revolutionary in the field. Energy control measures adjust energy levels in the laser pulse from creation to delivery.
Engineering of the Allegretto laser has taken special steps to ensure that the amount of energy in each pulse of the laser has been calibrated to exactly the right level. After the beam has been created, it passes through three “checkpoints” on its way through the system. At each of these points, the energy level is checked and adjusted if necessary, ensuring that the beam is perfectly ‘tuned’ at its destination.
Any laser is essentially a precise, controlled beam of energy. The Allegretto laser employs a proprietary overlapping spot placement method to ensure accurate energy placement. This is one of the ways that the Allegretto achieves a smoother, optically better, and more natural corneal surface than many other lasers used for vision correction.

We are so confident of our technology, and Dr. Soroudi’s track record of over 15,000+ successful LASIK and PRK surgeries, that we actually GUARANTEE our qualified patients with 20/20 vision. This is our testament to providing absolute highest standards in vision correction surgery found anywhere in the world.

We also provide interest-free financing, and follow-ups at no added charge for one year after LASIK. If, for any reason, you require an enhancement procedure, we cover all costs for up to one year!
