Macular Degeneration

Treating AMD in Los Angeles

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of vision loss in Americans age 60 and older. It is a disease where cells in the most sensitive (central) part of the retina (called the macula) slowly degenerate causing people to lose their central vision which can seriously jeopardize reading and driving. The pathophysiology of this disease is not yet well understood.

In a nutshell, the central retina is very similar to a rock that sits underneath a waterfall. For years, its bombarded by light that’s been focused on it by the natural lens in the eye (like a magnifying glass focusing light on a piece of paper), and just like the rock being bombarded by high-pressure water, overtime, it starts to weaken and thin.

AMD is classified as two basic types:

  • Dry AMD
  • Wet AMD

At an early stage where the macula is starting to exhibit degenerative changes (“Drusen” – which are tiny white collections in the retina) without any bleeding or exudation, the disease is classified as dry macular degeneration; Dry AMD does not affect vision as much as wet AMD. The only known effective treatment of AMD at this stage is a regimen of high dose minerals and vitamins that seems to slow the progression of this condition.

Dr. Soroudi is a top vision correction specialist in Los Angeles who provides eye treatment services to residents of Huntington Park, Woodland Hills, Encino, Santa Monica, Brentwood, Sherman Oaks, Calabasas, West Hills, Beverly Hills, and Westlake Village.

Early (“Dry”) Macular Degeneration with Drusen not involving the fovea (dark central park of the macula) which is the most sensitive part of our eyes responsible for our central vision.

More advanced Macular Degeneration (Drusen) with early foveal involvement.

As this condition advances, a thin protective membrane under the retina breaks and allows for multiple tiny blood vessels to grow under the retina and lift it. This is called a choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM). Left untreated, these tiny blood vessels start to leak proteinaceous fluid very similar to a water hose with holes in it, and starts to affect vision rapidly. This is referred to as wet macular degeneration, and it can have devastating effects on one’s vision.
