Intraocular Lens (IOLs)

Los Angeles Cataracts Surgeon

An intraocular lens (IOL) is an artificial lens that is designed to replace an eye’s crystalline lens. IOLs are the most commonly used lens-based vision correction method to treat cataracts. Intraocular lenses essentially function as new, clear lenses. As the cloudy vision produced by cataracts can severely affect a person’s eyesight, implanting a new, artificial lens can potentially allow for clear, uninhibited vision. Additionally, IOLs can also be designed to correct other ocular conditions, including nearsightedness or farsightedness. This can eliminate the need for glasses or traditional contact lenses.

From a more scientific perspective, the primary function of an intraocular lens is to focus light onto the back of the eye, or retina, in the same way a normal, healthy eye lens would. These rays of light are converted into electrical impulses that travel to the brain, where they are then reconstructed back into an image that we see. When there are alterations in these rays of light, or when a lens is not able to focus light onto the retina correctly due to cloudiness caused by cataracts, the brain cannot process the images accurately.

There are various types of IOLs, and your unique condition, including the severity of your cataracts and your eyesight, will play a large factor in determining which IOL will be used during your cataract surgery and lens exchange. For instance, monofocal IOLs are commonly used for patients who are nearsighted. Some surgeons may use a technique known as monovision, which involves an IOL for near vision in one eye and another IOL for distance vision in the other. Dr. Soroudi is also experienced in using advanced technology IOLs, such as multifocal IOLs, accommodative IOLs, and astigmatism correcting IOLs.
