Dr. Soroudi focuses on treating his clients as early as possible, so they can avoid the need for a corneal transplant. However, for some clients, the condition has progressed too far, and a cornea transplant is the sole remaining option. A permanently damaged or scarred cornea can be surgically replaced.

Full-thickness corneal transplant

At Soroudi Advanced LASIK & Eye Centers, we deliver “full-thickness corneal transplants” or “penetrating keratoplasty.” The procedure involves removing the damaged or diseased area of the cornea, which is then replaced with healthy donated human tissue. The cornea has five layers, and all five can be replaced with a full-thickness corneal transplant.

Candidates for a corneal transplant

Several eye conditions may indicate this procedure as the right approach. When a client has impaired vision due to a scarred or damaged cornea, or a diseased or infected cornea, several layers of the structure are damaged or abnormal. When the cornea is clouded or the shape significantly distorted, a replacement of all layers of the cornea may be necessary.

What is the procedure?

In this procedure, the cornea is delicately and carefully removed and then replaced with a healthy cornea, which is adhered to the eye with fine nylon sutures about the size of hair strands. The surgery takes about one hour to complete and can be performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation for comfort.

Recovery time after a cornea transplant

It is normal to have a slightly scratchy feeling in your eye after the surgery, a side effect that fades over the next two weeks. Your vision, initially, will be blurry, which could continue for several months. As the transplanted tissues settle and heal, vision improves.

Once full healing has been accomplished, vision correction with glasses or contacts may be necessary. If you need a corneal transplant, the healing time may require several months, but you will gain the advantage of once again living with healthy eyesight.
