LASIK surgery begins with you entering the laser room and laying down in a relaxed position on the procedure bed. Next, anesthetic drops are applied to numb your eye. The surgeon will then position you properly under the laser machine. I painless, lid separating device will keep you from having to worry about blinking or closing your eyes during the procedure. Next, your doctor creates an ultra thin flap in the cornea using computer-controlled laser pulses, which pass through the top layers of the cornea, to form microscopic bubbles at the optimum depth and position, gently separating the outer layer of the cornea, from the layer being treated. Your doctor will then gently lift this flap and hinge it back, out of the way. You will then be asked to fixate on a blinking funny red light and your doctor will precisely align the laser beam with your eye. When everything is just right, your doctor will activate the laser. Painlessly, computer controlled laser light bulbs will remove microscopic amounts of tissue, gently reshaping the cornea. The pattern of laser treatment is determined by a sophisticated program and based on the detailed measurements that were taken during your preoperative examination. Before you know it your, procedure is over and the surgeon will gently reposition the flap, smooth it with a special medical sponge, and allow it to drive for a short time

The VISX Star S4 Flying-Spot Excimer Laser with Iris Registration Technology
The STAR VISX S4 Excimer Laser with Iris Registration Technology performs custom treatment for Myopia, Hyperopia, and high Astigmatism:
The STAR VISX-S4 "flying-spot" excimer laser with Iris-Registration & Eye-tracking Technology is the platform of choice for the most advanced refractive practices around the country to date and is available at the Soroudi Advanced LASIK & Eye Centers in Los Angeles.
It has the most up-to-date "tracking" technology as well as "iris registration" which allows the laser to align itself with the patient's eye during surgery to ensure accurate laser placement every single time.
This machine has one of the widest ranges of treatments approved by the FDA, and allows Dr. Soroudi to perform custom treatments on his near-sighted (up to -11 diopters!), far-sighted (up to +4 diopters), and astigmatic patients (up to 6 diopters of astigmatism!).
The VISX S4 is also approved to perform custom LASIK / PRK to treat presbyopia (poor "reading vision" due to age).
This is the same excimer laser with which Dr. Soroudi had his own eyes operated on 9 years ago by his fellowship director; needless to say, he still enjoys 20/15 vision (better than 20/20) in each eye!
Wavefront LASIK: completely CUSTOMIZED vision correction!!!
Custom LASIK Surgery (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis)
Excerpted from Dr. Soroudi's Book: Advanced Refractive Surgery
Conceptually, LASIK is a very simple surgical procedure that involves two steps: cutting and lifting a small contact lens-like flap from a thin superficial layer of the cornea (about 100-120um in thickness), followed by reshaping of the underlying corneal tissue to correct the refractive error (near-sightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism).
It is here where a computer generated "wavefront" map of your eye is programmed into the laser to provide a custom treatment of all of your eye's visual imperfections. This custom treatment is intended to provide you with the best, most clear vision, without haloes, glare, or any other higher order aberrations that can also adversely affect your vision.
Needless to say, glasses and contacts do not correct such imperfections, so utilizing this technology, your vision can potentially be better than what you currently see with your glasses or contact lenses!
The following image best summarizes what happens during this quick & relatively painless procedure:
1. The Ziemer Femtosecond Laser utilizes millions of laser pulses to create a 9 to 9.5mm flap on the Cornea (in a matter of about 13 seconds per eye). This obviates the need for using a blade to do this.
2. Once lifted, the VISX S4 Flying Spot Laser will deliver the exact treatment parameters to the Cornea. This usually takes about 8 seconds per Diopter of treatment.
3. The flap is placed back in it's place. That's it!!
This is how a CUSTOMIZED "wavefront" treatment plan is delivered to the Cornea during LASIK
