Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK)
Los Angeles Eye Doctor for LASIK
Corneal scarring is a common cause of poor eyesight. There are numerous reasons why people develop scars on the surface of their corneas. Just like a camera with a scratched lens, a scarred cornea can have devastating consequences on one's vision.
In the past, there was only one option to treat these scars: a corneal transplant. Although a transplant can restore one's vision very nicely, it is a significantly invasive operation, and is fraught with risks of complications that can include:
- Graft rejection
- Cataract formation
- Retinal detachment
If one's scar only involves the superficial layers of the cornea, they can potentially be removed using the same (excimer) laser that is used to perform LASIK surgery. This procedure is called Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) and can obviate the need for a transplant altogether.
