• Comparing Blade LASIK, iLASIK and zLASIK

    || 01-19-2016

    There are several different versions of laser corrective surgery that you can have to improve your vision. One of the most common variations between procedures is the way the cornea flap is created — either with a blade or a bladeless technique that uses a laser. Today we will discuss 3 variations of the types of the procedure.

    LASIK

    In traditional LASIK, an incision is made with a tool called a microkeratome that creates a flap on the cornea. This flap is then lifted so that a laser can then reshape the cornea to repair the any visual imperfections. Once complete, the flap is then put back in place and will heal over the reshaped cornea. This procedure pre-dates all-laser procedures and has limitations in its flap creation. Because the microkeratome can only make a one-dimensional cut across the cornea, sometimes it can create an irregular surface that can affect the quality of your procedure.

    iLASIK

    iLASIK was the first all-laser LASIK procedure. In iLASIK, the flap is created by the use of the Intralase Femtosecond Laser and then the cornea is reshaped used a wavefront-guided treatment. Using an all-laser procedure allows your doctor to tailor the procedure specifically to your eye, which is important because everyone’s eye measurements vary. During traditional blade LASIK, there is no guarantee of the shape of the flap or how thick it will be, but having an all-laser procedure eliminates that uncertainty.

    zLASIK

    zLASIK is another all-laser LASIK procedure that uses the Ziemer Femtosecond Laser, which is one of the most advanced platforms in the world. A computer uses a generated “wavefront” map of your eye and is programmed to provide a custom treatment for all of your eye’s visual imperfections. This custom treatment is intended to provide you with the best and most clear vision without haloes, glare or any other issues that affected your vision. This allows you to see better than with your glasses or contacts that are not able to correct such imperfections.

    The all-laser techniques are 100% bladeless and 100% customized, which is why they are the preferred methods at Soroudi Advanced LASIK & Eye Center. Dr. Soroudi is one of the few eye surgeons in Los Angeles that is certified in using both the Ziemer Femtosecond Laser and the Intralase Femtosecond Laser. Our practice is also one of the very few ophthalmology practices in the area that possesses the necessary technology, expertise, and experience to guarantee 20/20 vision (or better) for our patients that meet the qualifying criteria.
