Advanced Cataract Surgery / Lens Exchange

Intraocular Lens Implantation (Monofocal or Multifocal)

Excerpted from Dr. Soroudi's Book: Advanced Refractive Surgery

As part of the aging process, the crystalline lens gets cloudy, thus interfering with distance or near vision. Patients who have developed cataracts usually complain of blurred or "cloudy" vision, halos at nights, difficulty seeing images at a distance, and difficulty seeing colors clearly.

There are multiple different forms of cataracts, and they each cause particular symptoms, but as long as your vision is affected by them, you are a candidate for cataract surgery.

Nuclear Sclerotic Cataract (most common)

Cortical Cataract (spoke-like) (extremely common)

Posterior Sub-Capsular Cataract (common)

Mixed Nuclear & Cortical Cataract

Lamellar Cataract (usually congenital)

Dense Traumatic Cataract

Polychromatic Cataract (very rare)

Dr. Soroudi replaces your cloudy lens with a clear (artificial) implant which is also designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and even astigmatism. He does the entire operation under topical anesthesia (in the form of eye drops) with only minor sedation (never under general anesthesia). This means that there will be no need for general sedation and no need for painful and dangerous injections to anesthetize the eye.

Prior to your surgery, Dr. Soroudi calculates the exact power of the lens he implants in your eyes with an accurate ultrasound "IOLMaster" technology by Carl Zeiss Meditec. Utilizing this accurate technology, Dr. Soroudi can better predict the refractive outcome of your procedure, and minimize the possibility that you'll need to wear glasses after surgery.

This procedure (with either lens) is performed on an outpatient basis at the comfort of our own in-house eye specialty surgery center, and it should not take more than about 10-20 minutes. You will be able to return to your normal activities the next day, and your vision recovers in anywhere from 24 hours to a week, depending on the amount of inflammation after surgery.
